Understanding Primary Care Specialties

So you can choose the right primary care provider for you.

Find a Primary Care Provider

When searching for the right provider, you may see different terminology for specialties and roles in our Find a Provider tool. Here’s what they mean:

Primary Care Specialties

Primary Care – The general term for your main healthcare provider (doctor, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant) who handles everyday health needs and coordinates your overall care.

Family Medicine – A type of primary care that provides care for patients of all ages, from children to seniors—care for your entire family.

Pediatrician – A doctor who specializes in caring for infants, children, and adolescents, focusing on growth, development, preventive care, and common childhood illnesses.

Internal Medicine – Primary care for adults, with expertise in managing chronic or complex conditions.

Primary Care Providers

Doctor (Physician) – A medical doctor (MD or DO) who diagnoses, treats, and manages a wide range of health conditions and coordinates specialty care when needed.

Advanced Practice Provider (APP) – A licensed medical professional who provides many of the same services as a doctor, including diagnosing, prescribing medications, and managing care. This includes:

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) – The highest level of training in nursing. A DNP can provide advanced patient care, lead healthcare teams, teach, and improve healthcare programs.

Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) – A registered nurse with advanced education and training who provides comprehensive primary care for patients of all ages.

FNP-BC stands for Family Nurse Practitioner-Board Certified.  This title signifies those providers who have earned and retained board certification by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).

Physician Assistant (PA) – A medical professional who works independently and in collaboration with doctors to diagnose, treat, and care for patients.

PA-C stands for Physician Assistant-Certified. This title signifies those who have earned and retained their certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.

With CMG Primary Care, you can be confident you’re receiving extraordinary care from a trusted provider.
